The link between teaching and research is often referred to as the key feature of higher education that distinguishes it from secondary education and vocational education. Moreover, the aim of linking teaching and research is to prepare students to make use of research tools, conventions, theories, methods etc and its results, engage them critically and empower them to conduct inquiry or research themselves, thus increasing the opportunities for linking teaching and research in academia (Carlson et al., 2022).
Nowadays, there is also the view that research and teaching are complementary processes, as the production of new knowledge during the research process is enhanced by its dissemination through teaching and vice versa. In fact, it has recently been observed that some university faculty members are so influenced by the results of these two complementary processes that they propose fundamental changes in their curricula and significantly vary their teaching methods (Skvoretz et al., 2023).
Action research is an important part of how academics can strengthen the teaching and research nexus as it allows them to conduct research to measure the efficacy of their instructional design, teaching strategies or approaches.
