Summary

Informal learning environments are considered to be all places outside the classroom (museums, theme parks, parks, environmental trails, etc.) where educational visits, excursions or activities can be organized, with the aim of gaining experience, cultivating skills and acquiring of knowledge. Informal learning environments for Higher Education are an educational approach to acquaint students, as well as future Primary and Secondary Education teachers, with experiential learning. Specifically, the students understand the principles of inquiry-based learning (Inquiry-Based Learning IBL) and apply them in the field, participating in organized educational activities. They understand the way of building knowledge through experiential learning and acquire the ability to design and implement relevant educational programs/scenarios that contribute decisively to the deepening of concepts related to Natural Sciences. The participation of STHETE students in organized workshops offered by the Museum of Natural History of Crete-Pan/mio of Crete is a typical example of the application of the above educational approach, offering feedback for the integration of alternative teaching methods in the education of students.
